Potomac Falls
Cruising down the G.W. Parkway makes Northern Virginia feel like the country. So does this coffee, which evokes a simpler time when ships sailed down the Potomac alongside carriages rolling to the farms of old Virginia. Swap the suit for a pair of overalls – while driving, if you can – and make that commute memorable.
Organic Peru APROCCURMA
Peru APROCCURMA Fairtrade Organic comes to us from producer-members of APROCCURMA (Asociacion de Productores Cafetaleros de la Cuenca del Rio Marañon). APROCCURMA was formed in 2012 with the goal of improving local producers’ quality of life. On family-owned farms in the province of Rodrigues de Mendoza, in Peru’s Amazonia region, producers cultivate an average of 2.5 hectares. Amongst the coffee trees, producers also cultivate a variety of other crops. APROCCURMA offers technical assistance to its producers in the cultivation, marketing and quality of their coffees.
Interestingly, 30 percent of APROCCURMA’s membership is comprised of women. The women in the association own their own land and farm according to certified Fair Trade and Organic practices. Regardless of gender, all members assert that being certified and part of the association has improved their incomes and the environmental and ecological quality of their lands.
Peru APROCCURMA Fairtrade Organic is harvested between July and October. After picking, the coffee cherries are pulped. Next, the pulped coffee is fermented for approximately 14 hours to loosen the mucielage. Subsequently, the coffee is washed with fresh spring water to remove the remaining pulp. Finally, the green beans are carefully dried on raised beds—built by the producers—and then in solar tents for between three and four days.
